Cappadocia Elmali (Apple) Church
This church located at Cappadocia Goreme Open Air Museum and was build about 1050. Church have nine domes, three apses and four columns and featuring floor plan of an enclosed Greek cross. The original entrance of the church was on the west side but today access to the church is through a later addition very narrow tunnel on the north side.
The church may have been named for an apple tree in front of its door. The elmali church, like many other Cappadocian churches , has domes, coloumns and capitals that were carved out of the rock mass.
From beneath certain crumbling frescoes one can discern the primitive and geometric decorations of the Iconoclastic Era. These were later covered with a layer of plaster, and while itwas still wet, new frescoes were painted that included representations of the human figure.
Scenes of the church:Deesis, Nativity, Adoration of the Magi, Baptism, Raising of Lazarus, Transfiguration, Entry into Jerusalem, Last Supper, Betrayel of Judas, Way of the Cross, Crucifixion, Entombment, Anastasis, Women at tha Tomb, Ascension and portraits of the Saints. There are also scenes from the Old Testament such as the Hospitality of Abraham and Three Young Men in the Fiery Furnace.
