Historical Mitlion monument in Sultanahmet square is the first starting point of Istanbul. Place of Egyptian Obelisk was considered as middle of world by Byzantines. They measured all distance by starting from here. So the monument is “zero” point. Distances from all famous cities or places to Mitlion were measured and recorded. These records are preserved in a building near Egyptian Obelisk. Also sketchy maps of known places in that age were drawn according to Mitlion. The people looked at these maps before long journeys and if they wanted, a part of maps were copied for them for a fee.

Byzantine people believed actually that Egyptian Obelisk is the middle of world and Hagia Sophia, the biggest sanctuary of that age, was maden there for this reason. In Ottoman Age, place of Uskudar Seperation Fountain was considered as the first starting point. Uskudar was selected by Ottomans as the first starting point for all eastern expeditions because it was close to Istanbul.
