Topkapi Palace Overview

Topkapi Palace that you can’t take your eyes off, was built up by Mehmet the second ( Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror) after the conquest of Istanbul surrounded by hundreds of times by the others.

Construction work was started in 1460 and completed in 1478 as a result of eighteen years of work.The Palace was the residence of the Ottoman Sultans for many years and was the administrative center of the Ottoman Empire and played its role as a host of Ottoman sultans until the 19th century.

İn the 1850’s ,Dolmabahce Palace was the new administrative center of the Ottoman Empire ,but the imperial treasury, sacred relics and archives documenting the history of the Sultanate were continued to be kept in the Topkapi Palace ,the heirloom of Mehmet the Conqueror.

Furthermore,from time to time ,the state ceremonies was continued to be made there.Topkapi Palace was converted into the museum by the order of the great leader Mustafa Kemal Ataturk after the abolish of monarchical regime.

Sultan Mehmet the conqueror who opened a new era termiating the previous one with the conquest of Istanbul,constructed a Palace referred as “Old Palace” following the conquest of Istanbul. After the construction of said “ Old Palace”,first “Tiled Kiosk” and then Topkapi Palace was built. Topkapi Palace was named as “New Place” by Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror.

In the period of Mahmut the first ,after Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror , a wooden seaside palace was built close to the walls of the Byzantine and the saluting cannons were placed at the front side of this Palace. This palace was names as “Topkapusu seaside palace” and this palace was destroyed by fire and this name was given to the new palace.In the course of the time, Topkapi Palace was expanded as the result of the philospy of Ottoman Empire and due to the relations between Palace and the subjects.It is rumored that the Topkapi Palace was inspired by Edirne Palace whose ruins are not present today,constructed at the bank of River Tinca by Sultan Murad the second ,the father of Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror. Topkapi Palace is a mysterious building consisting of apartments for goverment jobs, palatial mansions for nobles and lots of gardens and courtyards.
